What practices do you follow to ensure your work is sustainable, ethical and/or eco-friendly?Jewelry making is often times a process that uses harmful chemicals, creates waste and harms the earth. I make a true effort to use methods that are not only better for the planet, but better for the craftspeople I source my materials from as well. Gemstones All gemstones used in Modeco designs are sourced from small, often family-run businesses who I trust to responsibly come by their raw materials, and to offer their workers fair wages and safe working conditions. I tend to work with gems that require little to no mining, such as Montana Agate, as mining is dangerous and harmful to the earth. I do however, use gems such as opals, diamonds, and various beryls in some designs. When using these types of gems, I am careful to make sure they are ethical, traceable, or upcycled from vintage jewelry. Metals Mining for precious metal ores is a very invasive process, requiring deep drilling into the earth's crust. To minimize the negative impact of extracting new precious metals, I am committed to using only recycled metals, sourced from old jewelry and scrap materials. Every piece created by Modeco is made using metal that once served another purpose (old electronics, vintage or antique jewelry, silverware, etc.) giving each one a unique, unknown origin. Just think... your piece of Modeco Jewelry could contain metal that is thousands of years old! Imagine the endless possibilities of what it used to be in its previous life. During the process of creating jewelry, I also create a lot of scraps and sparkly metal dust (from sawing, filing, sanding, drilling, etc.). I collect every possible silver and gold dust particle and send them off to a refiner who melts them down and turns them into clean, recycled, ready to use material. Packaging Modeco Jewelry proudly uses FSC Certified and recycled materials for packaging and shipping. No single use items here! - Shipping boxes and jewelry boxes are made from FSC Certified materials - 100% recyclable (foam insert can be taken to a specialty recycler) - No plastic shipping tape Want to go the extra mile and increase the life of the packaging? - Safely store your jewelry in the provided jewelry box - Reuse the shipping & jewelry boxes to store small items (think office supplies, bobby pins, etc.) - Repurpose the tissue paper and envelope the next time you wrap a gift In the Studio I am actively committed to replacing traditional metalsmithing methods with alternatives that are safer for me and gentler on the environment. Some examples of these practices include using food-grade solutions in lieu of toxic chemical equivalents, reusing the plastic packaging that my supplies come in, recycling as much as possible, safely disposing of any waste, limiting my power usage, etc. My near goals include joining programs that will plant a tree for every item sold, and offset my carbon footprint.
